Type Locality and Naming

Lukala area, Bas-Congo, DRC. The Schisto-Calcaire Subgroup is subdivided into C1–C5 formations (Delhaye & Sluys, 1923; Cahen, 1954).

Synonym:

Includes C5 Formation, Bangu Formation. Includes the Kisantu Oolite unit.

Lithology and Thickness

magnesian ± organic limestone and dolomite, with oolite, chert, shale and calcareous shale beds; calcareous conglomerates or breccias at the base, overlain by talceous/silicified oolite or pseudo-oolite lenticular beds in shale ("Kisantu oolite" unit) Thickness: 155–265 m [210 m ave].


Lithology Pattern: 
Oolitic limestone

Lower contact

Underlain by the Lukunga Fm.

Upper contact

Overlain by the Ngandu Fm.

Regional extent

Depositional setting

Ramp composed of deep-marine outer ramp to shallow-marine inner ramp with oolitic shoal barrier, stromatolitic bioherms, lagoon- and sabkha-type environments (Cahen, 1954; Alvarez, 1995; Delpomdor et al., 2015).
